NFT Holders Kick It with Ronaldo Amid Looming Court Challenges
Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has fulfilled some promises to holders of his nonfungible tokens (NFTs), despite ongoing legal action in the United States. In a video released by crypto exchange Binance on January 25, Ronaldo was seen playing football with fans and NFT holders. Alongside fellow Binance endorser Khaby Lame and Croatian footballer Maria Marković, Ronaldo provided training and tips to improve their game. This comes after Ronaldo signed a multi-year NFT partnership in 2022 and released his first NFT collection with Binance, which included exclusive engagement opportunities for NFT holders.
Ronaldo expressed his enthusiasm for NFTs, stating in a press release that his connection with fans was vital and that he wanted to provide unprecedented experiences and access through NFTs. In 2023, he continued promoting NFTs with Binance, even subjecting himself to a lie detector test to prove his ownership of NFTs. Not everyone was pleased with Ronaldo’s involvement with Binance’s NFT arm, as some believed it encouraged investments in unregistered securities on the exchange.
As a result, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Ronaldo in a Florida court on November 27. The lawsuit alleges that Ronaldo actively promoted the sale of unregistered securities in collaboration with Binance. Serving Ronaldo with the lawsuit has proven challenging, as his address in Saudi Arabia is kept private. In response, the plaintiffs have requested alternative methods of notification, such as via email, X (formerly Twitter), and website publication, arguing that these methods comply with international agreements.
Despite the legal issues, Ronaldo has remained committed to fulfilling his engagements with NFT holders. This recent video released by Binance demonstrates his dedication to providing unique experiences to his fans. The outcome of the lawsuit remains uncertain, but Ronaldo continues to be actively involved in the world of NFTs and their promotion alongside Binance.
