Patreon Unwanted Emails: Possible Phishing Scam

There has been a recent wave of phishing emails targeting cryptocurrency users, with scammers impersonating content creator platform Patreon. Social media platforms X and Reddit have been flooded with reports from crypto users who have had their email addresses signed up for Patreon by these scammers. The scammers then proceed to sign them up for fake crypto project emails on the platform. This trend started on January 23, when users began receiving fraudulent airdrop offers from supposed Patreon creators posing as Chainlink, Solana, Manta Network, and Sui. Patreon Support acknowledged the issue on January 25 and assured the affected users that it had been resolved. They mentioned that the problem was related to email verification and a false claim from a crypto account pretending to be a Patreon creator. The screenshot of an email allegedly sent from Patreon revealed that the purpose of the scam emails was to gain unauthorized access to users’ cryptocurrency wallets. The issue was said to be fixed, but some users on social media platforms X and Reddit have still been receiving scam emails over the past four days. These targeted emails advertise a “Manta” airdrop. While some users have praised Patreon’s additional security measures, others have expressed concern about the persistence of these scams. reached out to Patreon for comment but did not receive an immediate response. According to Scam Sniffer, a blockchain security platform, more than 324,000 cryptocurrency users were affected by phishing scams in 2023, resulting in a total loss of $295 million.
