Crypto Community’s Response to Sam Bankman-Fried’s Lengthy Sentence

Former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for misusing customer funds during the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The sentencing took place on March 28, with Judge Lewis Kaplan handing down the 300-month sentence. Prosecutors had initially suggested a maximum of 50 years, while the defense requested a shorter sentence of up to 6.5 years. The judge noted that Bankman-Fried had committed perjury and intimidated witnesses. Following the announcement, there was a mixed reaction from the crypto community, with some feeling that the sentence was too lenient compared to similar cases.

Although the sentencing guidelines allowed for a sentence of more than 100 years, legal experts had predicted a range of 10 to 30 years. Some believed that the sentence would act as a deterrent for others in the crypto space. Mark Bini, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, stated that the sentence sends a message that those convicted of crimes in the crypto industry will face serious consequences. Swan Bitcoin Managing Director Terrence Yang disagreed, stating that justice had not been served and that 25 years was too light considering the damage caused by Bankman-Fried’s actions.

Bankman-Fried has been in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his bail was revoked in August 2023. He will now begin serving his sentence there. Another figure in the FTX case, Ryan Salame, the former co-CEO of FTX Digital Markets, is scheduled to face sentencing on May 1. Several other former executives associated with FTX and Alameda Research have already pleaded guilty and accepted deals.
