Reducing Developer Friction Vital for Scaling Blockchain Apps: Polygon Co-founder

In an interview with on March 7, Anurag Arjun, founder of Avail and co-founder of Polygon, emphasized the importance of creating blockchain infrastructure that attracts developers in order to scale blockchain applications. Arjun compared the early mobile apps to today’s popular platforms like Uber and Instagram, noting that it took years of experimentation to develop sophisticated applications. He believes that building developer-focused scaling solutions, such as Layer-2 rollups, is essential for advancing decentralized applications (dApps) based on blockchain technology.

According to a report by Electric Capital on January 17, the number of average monthly active developers in the blockchain space decreased by 24% to 22,411 in 2023 compared to the previous year. This decline is attributed to the large influx of new developers in 2022. The report also highlighted that the most valuable segment of developers, those with more than two years of experience who contribute the most code, continues to grow steadily.

When asked about the future of blockchain scalability, Arjun predicted the emergence of hundreds of application-specific rollups that will be unified under a user-friendly app layer, similar to the shopping experiences on Web2 platforms like Amazon. He emphasized the need for Web3 infrastructure to simplify the user experience in order to attract more mainstream users.

Arjun is also involved with Avail, a Web3 data availability and consensus layer. The company recently closed a $27 million seed funding round on February 26, with Founders Fund and Dragonfly as the lead investors. The funds will be used to accelerate the unification of Web3 by supporting the development of Avail’s three core products: the data availability layer, the nexus unification layer, and the fusion security layer.
