Starknet Prepares for Ethereum’s Dencun Hard Fork Impact

Starknet, a layer-2 scaling protocol, aims to maximize the cost benefits of Ethereum’s latest hard fork, Dencun, which will take effect on March 13th. The Starknet Foundation plans to introduce additional fee-saving initiatives on its protocol in conjunction with the Dencun upgrade. This hard fork is considered one of the most significant upgrades to Ethereum’s protocol since it transitioned to proof-of-stake consensus in October 2022. Dencun includes Ethereum improvement proposal (EIP-4844), which changes how Ethereum rollups store data on the mainnet.

Currently, several layer-2 rollups process transactions off-chain and provide a summary proof of these transactions to the Ethereum blockchain. Using call data to store cryptographic proofs of off-chain transactions has been expensive because all Ethereum nodes must process the data indefinitely. EIP-4844 introduces the concept of blob space, which allows rollups to add cheaper data to blocks. Blob space is not accessible to the Ethereum Virtual Machine and is automatically deleted after a fixed period of 18 days. This change significantly reduces the cost for rollups and provides the same level of security.

While developers anticipate a delay in realizing the fee reductions due to governance and upgrade procedures, the Starknet Foundation has announced a dedicated upgrade that aligns with Dencun. Starknet version 0.13.1 will transition from the expensive call data method to the more cost-effective blob transaction type, resulting in significant fee reductions. This shift is especially beneficial for Starknet as call data currently accounts for around 90% of the gas fees it pays for transactions on the Ethereum mainnet.

Starknet’s shared prover, SHARP, will also move from call data to blob space. SHARP sends Starknet’s state diffs, which contain information about updated contract storage and contract deployments, to Ethereum. The introduction of a new hash system in early 2024 will increase the efficiency of SHARP by allowing it to carry more transactions in batches known as trains. These improvements are expected to lead to a reduction in fees, with accurate statistics available within an hour of Dencun’s implementation. Users will immediately benefit from the cost savings as data will be priced based on Ethereum’s blob prices.

Starknet is leveraging the Dencun upgrade to maximize cost reduction and efficiency. By adopting the use of blob space and implementing upgrades to its protocol, Starknet aims to provide a more cost-effective solution for processing transactions on the Ethereum blockchain.
