Father-Son Duo Recovers $6M in Lost Crypto
There may be hope for crypto users who have lost their private keys or fallen victim to scams, as a father and son team from New Hampshire claims to have recovered over $6 million worth of lost cryptocurrency. Chris and Charles Brooks, who run Crypto Asset Recovery, offer a service to help users recover lost wallets and track scams for victims of crypto theft. The majority of their clients, about 70%, seek their assistance after losing their Bitcoin wallet passwords. Many of these users do not have seed word backups, making it difficult to recover their wallets without specialist help. Even new wallets may have a limited option for backup, making recovery challenging. Chris believes that most wallets can still be recovered using software that uses brute force to guess the password. Even if a user has a seed word backup, mistakes may have been made when copying it down, but these wallets can still be recovered as well. The duo recently helped a collector recover a lost wallet key for a “Casascius coin,” which contains a Bitcoin private key. The collector had damaged the coin, rendering part of the private key illegible. By using the remaining characters and the snippet of the Bitcoin address on the coin, they were able to guess the missing characters. They have also launched a scam tracking service to investigate cases of crypto theft. They follow the funds sent to scammers and attempt to link the scammer’s wallet to a known entity, such as an exchange. They then assist the client in compiling a report to report the case to law enforcement. Recovering scammed funds is extremely difficult, and involvement of the police and courts is often necessary. Despite the challenges, the team has had a success rate of around 45-46% when helping users with password recovery. Crypto users have lost billions of dollars over the years due to forgotten passwords and missing seed words, with approximately 20% of the Bitcoin supply estimated to be in wallets that are no longer accessible.
