Google Platform Exploited for Phishing Scam
It seems that Google is unintentionally promoting a crypto website that is designed to deceive users and drain their cryptocurrency. A recent report by BleepingComputer reveals that cybercriminals have found a way to advertise a fake version of Whales Market, a platform for trading airdropped tokens. This counterfeit website is being displayed as a sponsored link at the top of Google search results. has confirmed that Google is indeed promoting this fake Whales Market as an advertisement.
What makes this scam even more dangerous is that the fake website appears to have a genuine domain address on the search results page. When users click on the link, they are redirected to a phishing clone of the authentic Whales Market website. The counterfeit site replicates the interface of the real platform, tricking users into connecting their digital wallets. Unfortunately, this action activates malicious scripts that drain victims’ cryptocurrency from their wallets.
This incident is part of a larger trend where scammers are exploiting Google’s platform to deceive users. Notably, billionaire investor Mark Cuban had nearly $900,000 worth of crypto stolen from one of his hot wallets through a similar scam. In another case, scammers used Google Ads to target victims with fake versions of popular crypto sites and managed to drain approximately $59 million in cryptocurrency over a nine-month period.
While the individuals behind this recent phishing campaign remain unidentified, it appears that Google is taking steps to combat scammers. In April, the company filed a lawsuit against Chinese nationals who deceived people with counterfeit crypto investments through the Google Play store. Wallet-draining scams have become a significant problem in the Web3 ecosystem. In November 2023, the developer of the “Inferno” wallet-drainer retired after successfully stealing over $80 million from victims. Another developer of the “Monkey Drainer,” which had already stolen an estimated $13 million, also announced their retirement.
It is crucial for users to remain vigilant and cautious when engaging with crypto platforms and advertisements online. Verifying website addresses, using trusted sources for information, and implementing strong security measures can help mitigate the risk of falling victim to these scams. Platforms like Google need to continue strengthening their defenses against malicious actors in order to protect their users from these fraudulent activities.
