Hackers Leak Code of El Salvador’s State Bitcoin Wallet

The ongoing story surrounding El Salvador’s government-operated Bitcoin wallet, Chivo, continues to develop as hackers reveal more confidential information connected to the wallet. On April 23, the hacker group CiberInteligenciaSV released a portion of the source code for the Bitcoin Chivo Wallet on the criminal forum BreachForums. They stated that they were publishing the code for free since it was a government wallet. This comes after a series of hacking incidents related to Chivo, including the public exposure of personal data belonging to 5.1 million Salvadorans in early April. Local cybersecurity project VenariX warned the public about the upcoming leak on April 22, referring to CiberInteligenciaSV’s Telegram channel.

CiberInteligenciaSV’s Telegram post mentioned their plan to release the source code for Chivo Wallet and also published a file called Codigo.rar, which contained a compilation of code and VPN credentials from the Chivo Wallet ATM network. In September 2021, El Salvador became the first country to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender, with the government endorsing Chivo as the official Bitcoin wallet for its citizens. The platform allows users to buy, sell, store, and withdraw Bitcoin using ATMs. Chivo had a rocky start, with users reporting numerous bugs and technical issues.

Despite the reports of a personal data breach on Chivo in early April, the Salvadoran government has not acknowledged the problem. There have been no official statements from El Salvador authorities regarding the hack, leading to further confusion about the situation.
