Long-Dormant Bitcoin Revives in New Distribution

Bitcoin (BTC) that has remained inactive in its wallet for nearly a decade is beginning to move, according to recent data. On-chain analytics firm CryptoQuant has discovered thousands of these long-dormant coins are becoming active daily as BTC price movements approach the $70,000 mark.

The movement of “old” tranches of Bitcoin is particularly notable this month, as coins that have been immobile for lengthy periods are re-entering circulation. One of CryptoQuant’s metrics, the Spent Output Age Bands, recorded that on June 2 alone, 2,800 BTC were shifted on-chain for the first time in two to three years. Another 4,500 BTC that had been stationary for four to five years also moved on that date.

The activity didn’t stop there; on June 3, 210 BTC that had been dormant for a decade or more finally saw movement. J.A. Maartunn, a CryptoQuant contributing analyst, commented on social media, saying, “Old coins moving, after old coins moving, after old coins moving,” which he interpreted as a form of distribution within the network.

Although the movement of decade-old coins occurs with some regularity, the recent bull market phase has accentuated this behavior. Data from CryptoQuant indicates that this oldest group of Bitcoins became more active starting at the end of February, leading up to Bitcoin hitting its all-time high of $73,800.

Bitcoin’s long-term holders (LTHs) have also been a focus of interest. These entities, which hold Bitcoin for more than 155 days without selling, have generally resisted the urge to sell their assets. Last week, CryptoQuant noted that newer LTHs, specifically those holding coins for one to two years, had noticeably slowed their distribution activities.

This behavior shift aligns with Bitcoin’s price recovery from a recent correction down to $56,000. Onchained, a fellow contributor at CryptoQuant, observed that the 1-year+ and 2-year+ holders have transitioned from selling to holding their assets. This new trend suggests a renewed confidence in Bitcoin’s long-term price potential, as these cohorts prefer to retain their holdings rather than sell at current prices.

An accompanying chart from CryptoQuant compared levels of inactivity across several LTH cohorts. Onchained further added that various on-chain metrics indicate “strong underlying bullish sentiment.” This analytical perspective matches the findings of other market watchers, including popular trader Alan Tardigrade, who also identified similar bullish indicators over the weekend.

The recent movement of long-dormant Bitcoin and the behavior of long-term holders reflect a complex interplay of market forces. With a significant number of old coins re-entering circulation and renewed optimism among seasoned holders, the crypto market appears poised for interesting developments. Bitcoin’s price action will continue to be closely monitored as it challenges new milestones.
