Nigeria Denies Binance Exec’s Health Issues in Custody
The Nigerian Federal Government has countered allegations of substandard prison conditions for Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, asserting that he is receiving proper medical treatment and full consular services. This affirmation underscores their commitment to a lawful judicial process. The official statement was delivered on Friday, June 21, by Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation.
The response from the Nigerian government came after concerns were raised by two United States Members of Congress. Representative French Hill (Republican) and Representative Chrissy Houlahan (Democrat) visited Gambaryan at the Kuje Detention Facility on June 19, 2024. Their visit was publicized through a video post, urging for Gambaryan’s release.
Idris emphasized in his statement that Gambaryan’s detention is strictly based on a court order, suggesting that only a judicial body has the authority to alter the terms or facilitate his release. He reiterated that even while in custody, Gambaryan has access to necessary healthcare services, and the conditions of his detention are not detrimental to his health.
“It has become necessary for the Federal Government of Nigeria to address claims that Binance Executive Tigran Gambaryan is being held in unsavory prison conditions in Nigeria or that his health is deteriorating. We would like to state that these allegations are false and should be ignored,” said Idris. He emphasized that Gambaryan benefits from full consular support provided by his home country, and his basic rights are being respected, including access to high-quality healthcare services.
Further stressing the Nigerian government’s stance, Idris reiterated their commitment to ensuring a fair trial for Gambaryan while pursuing legal actions against Binance. He pointed out that Nigeria is not alone in this effort, as several other countries are also engaged in similar legal pursuits against the company.
Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki, has been actively seeking his release, appealing to Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to mirror the recent actions of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in withdrawing charges against other individuals. She argued that her husband, who has spent a decade as an IRS Special Agent battling money laundering and tax evasion, deserves similar consideration.
Supporting this appeal, the U.S. lawmakers highlighted Gambaryan’s professional accomplishments and his significant role in combating financial crimes. They pointed out that his career has been dedicated to rooting out illicit financial activities, making a strong case for his release.
During a court hearing held on June 21, Abdulkadir Abbas, a director at Nigeria’s Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), continued his testimony in the EFCC’s case against Binance and Gambaryan. Abbas reaffirmed that Binance lacked the proper registration to conduct operations in Nigeria, marking a critical point in the ongoing legal proceedings.
The court has postponed the case to July 1, where cross-examination is expected to continue. This adjournment indicates that the legal battle involving Binance and its executive, Tigran Gambaryan, is far from over, with significant legal questions still awaiting resolution.
