Nigerian Officials Drop Charges Against Binance Exec

Nigerian authorities have decided to withdraw certain charges against Tigran Gambaryan, an executive with Binance. This information was shared by a spokesperson for Gambaryan’s family on June 14. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has rescinded tax-related accusations against both Gambaryan and another Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla. Despite this development, both individuals continue to confront money laundering allegations from Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with the case scheduled to proceed on June 20.

Representatives for Gambaryan’s family have strongly criticized the remaining charges, labeling them as “bogus.” They pointed to the dismissal of the tax charges by the FIRS as evidence that Gambaryan and Anjarwalla should never have faced legal proceedings initially. The health condition of Tigran Gambaryan has become a significant point of concern, especially since he reportedly collapsed due to Malaria during a court hearing on May 23.

According to statements from his family’s representatives, Gambaryan’s health has declined further since the court incident, with reports indicating he is now battling pneumonia. The family has also accused prison authorities of a lack of transparency regarding his health status. They claim that despite a direct court order from Justice Emeka Nwite to immediately hospitalize Gambaryan, prison officials delayed his medical check-up by 11 days. The results of this health check-up have not been shared with Gambaryan’s family, his legal team, or the U.S. embassy, creating additional distress.

The situation has generated considerable concern and attention. Gambaryan, along with Anjarwalla, was initially apprehended in February on charges related to both money laundering and tax evasion, actions tied to their roles at Binance. This came even after Binance agreed to exit the Nigerian market. In an unexpected turn of events, Nadeem Anjarwalla managed to escape from Nigerian detention in March using his Kenyan passport, making his way to Kenya. He was subsequently located and arrested in Kenya, where he now faces the prospect of extradition back to Nigeria to face the charges.

Simultaneously, there has been an outpouring of support for Tigran Gambaryan from various quarters. Recently, U.S. lawmakers sent a letter to the State Department and to Roger D. Carstens, the presidential envoy for hostage affairs, highlighting Gambaryan’s situation. They emphasized that Gambaryan, who previously worked as an agent for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has been “wrongfully detained.” This letter has intensified calls for his release.

Following the lawmakers’ letter, former federal prosecutors in the United States also lent their voices to the campaign for Gambaryan’s release. On June 6, 108 former prosecutors signed a letter addressed to the State Department, urging immediate action to secure Gambaryan’s freedom. This collective pressure from both legislators and legal professionals underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for resolution.

The case of Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla continues to attract international attention and advocacy, highlighting the complex interplay between legal processes, health crises, and diplomatic pressures. As the scheduled court date of June 20 approaches, all eyes will be on the developments in Nigeria’s judicial handling of the case.

The partial withdrawal of charges against these Binance executives highlights inconsistencies and raises questions about the validity of the remaining allegations. The deteriorating health of Gambaryan and the opaque handling of his medical needs add another layer of urgency and concern to an already fraught situation. International advocacy efforts may play a crucial role in resolving this complex case, as stakeholders await the next legal proceedings.
