Private Firms Join Global CBDC Project

Project mBridge, a groundbreaking multi-central bank digital currency (multi-CBDC) initiative led by the Bank of International Settlements (BIS), is currently seeking participation from the private sector to help transition its existing prototype into a fully functional minimum viable product (MVP). This ambitious project was initiated in 2021 through a collaboration involving the BIS Innovation Hub and the central banks of Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, China, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Saudi Arabia and 26 additional observer members have since joined the initiative.

The primary aim of the central and commercial banks involved in Project mBridge has been to experiment with CBDCs to improve cross-border fiat transactions. These traditional transactions are often plagued by high costs, slow speeds, and significant operational complexities. The overarching goal is to establish a “universally accessible” multi-CBDC infrastructure that enhances efficiency and reliability in cross-border payments.

From its inception, Project mBridge’s core participants have been diligently working on developing a prototype platform. This platform employs the mBridge blockchain to facilitate real-time, peer-to-peer, cross-border payments and foreign exchange transactions. As the project transitions to the MVP stage, private sector firms are encouraged to propose innovative solutions and use cases that will further develop and showcase the platform’s full potential.

The initiative to launch the mBridge MVP dates back to September 2023, announced by Hong Kong Monetary Authority CEO Eddie Yue. At that time, Yue highlighted that tests had demonstrated mBridge’s capability to enable faster, cheaper, and more transparent cross-border payments. Initially, BIS had no plans to involve private sector firms, focusing solely on gaining more participation from fellow central banks.

Eddie Yue elaborated on the project’s future, emphasizing the openness of the platform to welcome more central banks and the imminent launch of the MVP. The purpose of this MVP is to set a foundation for the gradual commercialization of the mBridge project, transforming it from a prototype into a practical solution that can be used for real-world transactions.

Technically, the mBridge MVP is designed to handle real-world transactions and is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), which broadens its utility and appeal. This move indicates a strategic advance toward creating a robust infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale international payments.

A recent report from BIS suggests that all central banks worldwide are likely to adopt generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance cybersecurity measures shortly. According to the report, a significant majority of respondents, over 71%, are already utilizing generative AI, while an additional 26% plan to incorporate these technologies into their operations within the next one to two years.

Despite the promising advancements in AI, particularly regarding faster response times to cyberattacks and improved detection of anomalies and suspicious trends, the most prevalent concern among central banks remains the costs associated with implementing these generative AI tools. Consequently, as Project mBridge progresses, managing the financial and operational costs of such cutting-edge technology will be a critical challenge for all participants.
