Uniswap Labs’ Crypto Game Eyed for Emmy

Uniswap Labs could secure a milestone achievement in the cryptocurrency sector by potentially earning the industry’s first Emmy Award for its acclaimed acquisition, Crypto: The Game (CTG). This online survival game has garnered immense popularity among enthusiastic gamers, making it a strong candidate for an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Emerging Media Program category. The game features a reality TV show structure where ten โ€œtribesโ€, each consisting of 80 participants, compete in various โ€œimmunity challengesโ€. These challenges include arcade games and digital scavenger hunts, with players striving to outlast their competitors.

Participants in Crypto: The Game must pay 0.1 Ether (ETH) to enter, and the final remaining player wins the accumulated entry fees, minus a 10% deduction used for game maintenance. Teams that lose at any stage have to vote off one of their members. To gain personal immunity, players can tweet about their involvement in the game. In the final round, previously eliminated players cast votes for one of the last standing competitors. Each season spans ten days and operates on a 24-hour real-time cycle on the Base blockchain.

Supporters of CTG can keep track of the game’s progress through social platforms like X or Farcaster and can also tune into a dedicated podcast. The game, launched in January, is moving forward with plans for its third season. The successful completion of Season 1 saw the winner receiving approximately $150,000, while Season 2’s victor netted $274,000, thanks to an increase in ETH’s market value. Impressively, the NFTs required for entry in Season 2 sold out within 15 minutes. Players have the option to sell their NFTs, allowing buyers to take over their spot in the game.

Dylan Abruscato, the lead developer, disclosed to Fortune that CTG players come from varied backgrounds, including members of the crypto X community, crypto influencers, other market participants, and about 10%-15% individuals with no prior experience in cryptocurrency, referred to as “normies”. This diverse player base emphasizes the game’s broad appeal and accessibility.

On June 11, right before the Emmy nomination ballot was revealed, Uniswap Labs โ€” famed for its Ethereum-based decentralized cryptocurrency exchange โ€” acquired CTG. The specifics of the transaction remain undisclosed but involve a mix of cash, crypto, and equity. Abruscato and his team have now joined Uniswap to oversee Season 3 of CTG and to develop other interactive experiences aimed at engaging the crypto community.

CTG is set to compete against a range of other digital and virtual reality programs, such as Verizonโ€™s Catch My iPhone game, the Billboard Music Awards, and various projects from notable figures including horror film director Eli Roth, renowned composer Jean-Michel Jarre, and celebrity Lucy Liu, as well as beloved Claymation characters Wallace & Gromit. This diverse array of competitors highlights the innovative and emerging nature of the award category.

Voting for the Emmy nominations is conducted by members of a specific โ€œpeer groupโ€ and will continue until June 25. This voting process will determine which programs advance in the competition, reflecting the judgment of industry professionals and experts.

In a related development, Solanaโ€”another prominent name in the cryptocurrency worldโ€”expanded into a new market area on June 12 by launching Bond, a customer loyalty marketing service. This move signifies Solana’s efforts to diversify its offerings and tap into adjacent markets, similar to Uniswap Labs’ strategic acquisition of CTG.

As the competition for the Emmy Award unfolds, the recognition of innovative projects such as CTG demonstrates the growing intersection of cryptocurrency with mainstream media and entertainment, paving the way for future developments in this dynamic field.
