Microsoft’s €3 Billion AI Development Investment in Germany
Tech giant Microsoft has announced plans to invest 3.2 billion euros ($3.44 billion) into Germany over the next two years. The focus of the investment will primarily be on infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI). This significant funding announcement was made by Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president and vice chairman, at an event in Berlin. The company plans to build new data centers in Germany and provide training to boost AI skills development. According to Reuters, this is Microsoft’s largest investment in Germany in 40 years.
Europe is becoming an attractive destination for major technology developers. On the same day as Microsoft’s announcement, the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty revealed that Google plans to establish an AI-dedicated hub in France. This center, to be located in Paris, will house approximately 300 researchers and engineers to support the country’s AI ambitions. Google recently announced its “AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe,” pledging 25 million euros ($26.9 million) in funding to support skills training in the AI sector for Europeans. The initiative aims to collaborate with governments, civil society, academics, and businesses to provide AI training to local startups, with a focus on workers who may be at risk of losing their jobs to automation and AI.
Italy has also introduced a similar initiative to develop the digital skills of its workforce. The Italian government plans to allocate millions of euros to train workers who may face job displacement due to automation and AI. These investments in AI infrastructure and skills development in Europe coincide with the European Parliament’s preparation to establish the landmark AI Act. Regulators have already approved a preliminary agreement for this legislation, with a parliamentary vote scheduled for April. The EU AI Act will be one of the world’s first sets of rules to monitor the development and deployment of AI, second only to China which released its own set of rules in August 2023.
