50 Cent’s X Account Hacked, Causing $300M Rug Pull
Curtis James Jackson III, widely recognized as 50 Cent, recently alleged that his social media account on X (formerly known as Twitter) and his personal website were compromised by hackers. These cybercriminals exploited his account to endorse a crypto scam, causing substantial financial damage. The scammers developed a new cryptocurrency token called “GUNIT,” which they manipulated and marketed using Jackson’s substantial Twitter following of around 12.9 million people. This fraudulent activity led to a dramatic increase in the token’s value, attracting a significant number of investors. Eventually, the token’s worth was drained, plummeting its price to a mere $0.00016, during an event known as a “rug pull.”
On June 21, Jackson took to Instagram, addressing his 32.8 million followers, to disclose the breach of his X account and website. He explained that a considerable amount of money had been siphoned off due to the hack. He pointed out that Twitter took swift action to secure his account. Jackson further added that the perpetrators managed to extract $300 million in just 30 minutes and emphatically stated that he had no involvement with the cryptocurrency. To support his claim, he shared three images featuring posts from other members of the crypto community, showcasing the typical rug pull pattern observed with the $GUNIT token, highlighting its rapid price escalation followed by a severe drop.
This incident is just the latest in a series of similar occurrences involving celebrities and cryptocurrencies. Recently, other public figures have found themselves entangled in the world of digital currencies, often leading to controversies and confusion. Caitlyn Jenner is a notable example, having recently made headlines with her entry into the cryptocurrency market. She faced scrutiny and generated mixed reactions upon launching her own memecoin, causing some to speculate whether her social media accounts were also compromised.
Initially, Jenner dismissed claims that her X account was hacked; These suspicions resurfaced as her actions and statements appeared contradictory. Despite the confusion, Jenner continued to advocate for her token called “JENNER.” On May 27, a significant development was reported where Jenner’s X account posted a request, encouraging followers to send her their preferred memecoins. Although she later retracted this statement, Jenner reaffirmed her commitment to promoting her own token.
Jenner’s approach in the crypto market has been somewhat erratic. She initially removed the contentious post but continued to back her JENNER token. She expressed that the advertisement for a third-party token, which she had initially shared, created unnecessary confusion among her followers. Jenner clarified that focusing solely on her JENNER token was her primary concern from the very beginning and insisted that the misleading post was not worth the trouble it caused.
Jackson and Jenner’s experiences reflect a broader issue of celebrities getting caught up in the often volatile and unpredictable world of cryptocurrencies. Despite the potential for significant profit, the lack of regulation and the ease with which online platforms can be manipulated poses substantial risks. As more celebrities venture into the crypto space, the frequency of such incidents may increase unless more stringent security measures are adopted.
Public figures engaging with cryptocurrencies also need to be cautious about their endorsements and promotions. They wield significant influence over their followers, who may trust their endorsements and invest money based on their recommendations. This level of responsibility necessitates a clear understanding of the products or tokens they promote, ensuring they do not inadvertently become part of fraudulent schemes.
The rapid ascent and decline of crypto tokens can be enticing for quick profits but is laden with risks. The incidents involving Jackson and Jenner serve as reminders that being associated with the cryptocurrency market can have serious repercussions. Therefore, both celebrities and their followers need to exercise due diligence and caution in all crypto-related activities to avoid falling victim to scams and financial losses.
